They were now far away from military action and began to move towards Bihach. Hunger exhausted them, and they tried to move without attracting attention. Next morning, they came to a lonely house standing on a hill. Smoke was coming out of the chimney, and nobody was around. Observing all the precautions, Jukan went into the house, where he found one old lady. She was the owner of the house, and her two sons were serving in the Ustachi.

‘Listen, Mother, for me, it doesn’t matter who your sons are. We don’t want to hurt you. We only need some food, and we will leave you alone.’

‘What kind of food are you talking about when I’m as hungry as a wolf?’ she asked bitterly, and she sounded convincing.

But Jukan had a strong feeling that this wasn’t the truth, and he ordered a search of the house. All his soldiers were peasants and knew very well where it was possible to hide food, and they started the search. But an hour later, they had still found nothing. Jukan refused to give up, however. He took the old woman outside, rolled up his sleeve, showed her the big compass, and lied. ‘Listen, Mother, this device will show me precisely where your storage is, so give us a little, or we will take it all.’

The woman was obviously frightened but tried not to show it and continued to resist. ‘Where is my storage? I have nothing to eat myself’ she cried.

Jukan, pretending to look at the compass, began to walk around, trying to watch her eyes. Sometimes he stopped, peering into the distance, secretly looking at her. At last, when he began to peer at the valley filled with deep snow, the old woman turned pale and began to bite her lip. ‘Here it is,’ said Jukan, pointing his finger, and the old woman began to wail. They took shovels and went down the hill and began to dig. Soon, they found four large barrels of cheese, laid in salty cottage cheese for preservation. There were more than 100 cheeses, but they didn’t want to take them all. Everyone took one cheese, and the rest they left for the old lady. Now they could relax . . . with cheese, they could survive.
